Teaching the routine

~ from shared chant to visual cues

When the Word Limit Challenge is first introduced, the routine is taught through a shared chant, supported by clear visuals. This helps children learn the sequence together and understand what each step is for. Saying it aloud and repeating it together makes the routine memorable and easy to follow.

Once children are familiar with the routine, the language is reduced. Simple picture cues can then be used on tables to remind children of the steps without requiring them to read or stopping their flow of writing. This is particularly helpful in Year 1, where reading confidence varies and table space is limited.

The chant is used to teach and practise the routine; the visual cues are used to prompt and support independence. Over time, both can be faded as the routine becomes secure.
